Thin - in content and size - about the subject. A very basic primer on the subject, but does not get into much details. A somewhat savvy business person would be able to figure out much of the topics covered in this book. Not worth the price of purchase.

We are living in Italy for a couple of years so we needed something that could help us survive when we go out to eat. This book is fantastic. We are slow using it because you have to look up every word in the decription of the meal, but the vast majority of the words are there!! We have friends that are fluent in Italian and they were quite impressed with this book. I highly recommend it.

So this is the most essential book we had on our honeymoon. If you are going to Italy buy this. It is small enough to fit in a purse (not a most clutches or small purses though) or a bag or even the back pockets of most jeans (for a guy that is). While it is small it is not hard to read or too thick....basically this is designed by people who travel for people who are traveling with close attention to detail on understanding the needs of people who are not carrying books the size of dictionaries as they explore a country.

My wife and I know functional Spanish which was moderately helpful in moving around Italy. But Italy is a tourist destination so a lot of vendors speak at least some English. A lot of menus had English translations, but many of the descriptive words were not translated so it was guess work at some point in major cities. This little book cleared this guess work up and helped us fully understand what we were ordering.

We also spent some time in the countryside where there was a lot less English. That is when this book became a lifesaver. We are foodies and this really helped us understand entire menus that were only in Italian. All you should need is this book and a general guidebook (e.g. Italy for Dummies) to take in the full experience of Italy

For anyone with food allergies this will be the most important purchase of your trip. It will literally save your life.

They also make other books, and I plan on using them for traveling as we explore the globe.

This should be very helpful in Italy. So many times the menus do have English written under the items but if you find a great little hidden gem off the beaten path this should really come in handy.

My husband and I found this book indispensable on our trip to France last year. We didn't even go to Paris, so did not require any Paris-specific information, but the Menu Reader is invaluable all over France. It has many words and phrases that you will not find in your pocket French dictionary. I also LOVE the drawings and "handwritten" commentary in the margins - both useful and good for a laugh. I didn't agree with all of the food assessments (I might have a slightly wider tolerance for odd foods) but for the most part you will not be led astray. :) It has space for your own notes at the back which I plan to use next time we visit France. It is lightweight and fits in my purse - no excuses not to take it! (Well, one excuse ... brain fart. We were kicking ourselves on this year's France trip when we inadvertently left our book behind.) Buy this!

I used this small book (easy to carry everywhere) on a recent trip to Paris. I found it incredibly helpful in trying to decipher menus, and when we sat near other Americans they clearly were jealous of this handy guide.
In addition to menu translations, this book also contains useful tips about dining out in Paris.

I found this book very useful when eating in France (not just Paris!). It gave more useful information than a phrase book and, more importantly, gives very good CULTURAL information on how to survive Paris. This is something that tour books lack.

Many Americans who go to France come back saying how rude the French are. It might surprise them to find out onjouthat the French find Americans to be very rude! France is a much more formal country than the US and it's expected that you ALWAYS greet people with a "Bonjour" before saying anything else to them and that you say please and thank you for everything. As Americans, we just don't do that.

I was pleasantly surprised to find this and other cultural nuances in this book. In my week in France, I didn't have any problems with "rude French people". I found them to be quite friendly and helpful.

Love the concept...but did not like the book. The restaurant recommendations are pretty useless. With no map, there's no way to figure out where the heck the restaurants are. And the roads are too small to appear on typical tourist maps. The food glossary is similarly not very helpful. For example, one dish I looked up was defined as "red sausage." Um, what the heck is that? My recommendation: just buy a good French dictionary.
