Melbourne, Australia (AHN) – A research study by the University of Sydney finds that legally requiring adults to wear bike helmets does not lead or contribute to road safety.
In an interview with the Herald Sun newspaper, Charles Rissel, associate professor at the University of Sydney, said a study by the University of Sydney published in the latest Journal of the Australasian College of Road Safety, holding that wearing of bike helmets does not contribute to road safety. The study reported, “Findings suggest the greatest reductions in head injuries … come from road improvement safety measures introduced prior to 1991, such as lower speed limits, random breath testing and intensive road safety advertising.”
The research supports a court ruling on Aug. 28 by New South Wales District Court Judge, Roy Ellis, who reversed the conviction of a female biker, Sue Abbott, for not wearing a cycle helmet. He ruled that she had “an honestly held and not unreasonable belief as to the danger associated with the use of a helmet by cyclists.”
For bicycle riders under the age of 15, however, wearing the helmet is a must, as the same study showed this group suffering half of the head injuries it identified with riding a bike.

Sidney, Australia (AHN) – According to reports by the Australian Transport Safety Board, a second Qantas passenger jet landed safely in Singapore Friday after turning back shortly after takeoff due to engine problems.
It is the second jet in as many days to be grounded in Singapore because of the mechanical issue.
The Boeing 747-400 was carrying 412 passengers and 19 crew members and was on its way to Sidney, Australia, reports stated.
On Thursday, a Qantas Airbus A380 jet had to return to Singapore for an emergency landing at Changi Airport after one of its engines shut down shortly after takeoff. Part of the engine’s covering fell off as it returned to the airport, according to reports.
Airbus has asked the manufacturers of the engines to inspect all of them as a precaution.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating both incidents.

Sick Project Symptoms
Some of the sick project symptoms include:
- Excessive hard work;
- No time is allowed for taking breaks from work;
- Senior management are avoiding you;
- Sense of denial by team members that things are fine;
- Errors are compounding;
- The team people are tired and irritable; and
- No fun is being had by the team.
Project Failure Factors
There are also two levels of factors that lead to project failure. These are:
Level 1 factors – These factors guarantee project failure [or in street jargon, they are showstoppers]. That is, the project will fail to deliver quality, added value and professional satisfaction on time and in budget.
Level 2 factors – There are a number of other factors, which may not prevent the project from delivering on time and in budget, but will generally result in substantial degradation of quality, added value and professional satisfaction.
