Cirque Goes 3D: Cirque du Soleil Teams Up With “Avatar” Director James Camerson For 3D Films

Friday, December 10th, 2010
Anthony Jones – Celebrity News Service Reporter

Los Angeles, CA, United States (CNS) – After over two dozen shows and collaborators that have included the estates of Michael Jackson, Elvis, and the Beatles, Cirque du Soleil is now partnering “Avatar” director James Cameron to bring their already eye-popping performances to the big-screen in 3D.

Cirque du Soleil, Cameron, and “Chronicles of Narnia” director Andrew Adamson, along with Reel FX Entertainment, announced a new partnership Thursday to develop Cirque-inspired theatrical productions in 3D.

The first project under the new partnership is already in production. It’s not a Cirque show filmed live. It features original visuals, some of which have already been shot, follows a narrative written by director Andrew Adamson, who also brought us “Shrek” and “Shrek 2.”

According to the official release, the untitled film is based on the premise, “There are worlds beyond dreams, illusion and imagination, where human beings are capable of anything. Where love rules, and everything your heart yearns for is beautifully, incredibly real.” Sounds perfectly Cirque to me.

“Shooting with the Cirque du Soleil team has been one of the most enjoyable experiences of my professional life,” said James Cameron, who also directed the blockbusters “Titanic” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” “For years I’ve been a fan, both of their celebration of human physical performance and for their wild imagination in the designs of characters, costumes, music and unparalleled theatrical staging.

“They’ve built a global brand, and it’s a unique opportunity for me, and my 3D partner Vince Pace, to bring the Cirque du Soleil experience to a world wide audience through the magic of 3D cinema,” Cameron continued. “The images we’ve been shooting are stunning, and I know Andrew Adamson will weave them into a transporting, dreamlike narrative which will mesmerize audiences of all ages, around the world,” said James Cameron.”

“Cirque du Soleil has always inspired me with their window into the balance between beauty and danger; art and technology; gravity and unbelievable physical ability,” said director Andrew Adamson.

“Bringing that to the screen in 3D is a perfect synergy between an art form and a medium – a chance to offer the audience an entirely new experience – and the opportunity to do that with people at the top of their game, like Jim and Cirque du Soleil, is an incredible privilege.”

The first of these 3D Cirque experiences could hit theaters in 2011. Adamson serves as producer on the latest “Narnia” adventure “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” while Cameron is already in the early stages of work on the first “Avatar” sequel, which hits theaters in 2014.

Want to Open a Bar? Know Your Startup Costs

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

By the time you investigate and determine each cost of starting up a bar, you may have spent months on research only to determine that you cannot profitably operate in the way you had envisioned, sending you back to square one. Avoid this possibility by starting with an expert (and preferably more than one) who can help you create a top-down estimate.

Start With Your Network

The first place to look is with friends, family, or contacts of your friends and family who are willing to speak with you from their experience of launching a bar. Hopefully they will be willing to do so for nothing more than the satisfaction of you out. Some bar start up costs are similar to those of a nightclub or restaurant, so consider speaking to individuals with those experiences as well.

Non-Competing Business Owners

Bar business owners operating in another city, far enough away that they cannot be considered a competitor, may be willing to help you out by sitting down to describe the costs of launching. Perhaps the consulting fee may be as low as the cost of the business owner’s lunch.

When talking to individuals who have opened bars in the past, be sure to determine whether the cost of doing business and launching in your city will be higher or lower than in the other city, and by how much. Compare prices for some standard items between these markets to check this. Also consider the effect of inflation in the years that have passed since the business owner you spoke with launched his or her bar. Apply the geographic conversion and inflation to the estimates they gave to get a better estimate.

Consultants

Paid consultants with experience helping bars to launch are another means to expert opinions on startup costs. The cost may be significantly higher than speaking with a business owner, but you may gain from their experience working with multiple businesses and the fact that their business reputation rests on their ability to give good advice. As long as you check references carefully for any consultant you work with, you can be reasonably assured of receiving good help.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, remember that all of the experts you speak with can only give you estimates and that the actual costs you may incur will be higher or lower than the total they give. You will eventually have to do your own detailed investigation, but after speaking with a few experts you should have a range can assume you are operating within.

While you are speaking to an expert about start up costs, don’t miss the opportunity to ask about other key challenges they came up against and hearing advice they wish they had received before they launched. Document any knowledge you can gain from their experience.
