Anne Lu – Celebrity News Service Contributor

London, United Kingdom (CNS) – Travel content provider Lonely Planet has launched a new series of Audio Walking Tours for iPhone and iPod Touch users who are traveling to London. In a first-of-its kind partnership, the audio tour brings together Lonely Planet’s trusted recommendations and audio productions from AudioGO, including materials from BBC archive.

Just in time for the upcoming royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the tours take users on a recommended route, with reviews written by the travel guide’s expert authors and atmospheric audio commentary.

The apps – which are for five iconic walks in central London: Covent Garden, Southbank, Spitalfields, the City and the West End – provide detailed information to let users explore at their own pace.

And to avoid roaming charges for international users, the tours can also work offline.

Jeremy Kreitler, Lonely Planet’s VP Wireless Services, said, “The apps are an exciting new innovation which enable travelers to hear and read about the top attractions in some of the most fascinating areas of a city. This is the first mobile product which we have created without using any pre-existing book content. It has been created with the on-the-go traveler in mind.”

“Along with our city guides and phrasebooks on the iPhone we hope the new Audio Walking Tours help travelers to get the information they need at their fingertips and what better city to start with than London, with the Royal wedding and Olympics around the corner, it is the destination of the moment.”

Each tour is available for $1.99 for a limited period, after which it can be bought at its regular price of $3.99.

Telecommuting job opportunities up 400 percent in past 3 years

Sunday, January 30th, 2011
Vittorio Hernandez – AHN News

San Francisco, CA, United States (AHN) – Telecommuting job opportunities in the U.S. jumped almost 400 percent in the past three years, according to online employment portal FlexJobs.

FlexJobs Chief Executive Officer Sara Sutton Fell said Wednesday that aside from the rising number of job openings, the number of young people in search of work for telecommuting and flexible jobs also grew 181 percent during the past three years.

A human resources expert explained that telecommuting work is the preferred option of the younger generation because it offers them better work-life balance.

The arrangement also removes a lot of overhead expenses for companies because it frees them from office space rental, and saves people transport costs, while helping reduce commuter and vehicle volume.

However, one downside to the arrangement is the lack of social interaction for home-based workers, particularly those who live alone.

While technology permits personal chats among online co-workers, social relationships from such means of communications often lack depth, experts said.

According to Fortune Magazine, which issued this year its list of 100 best companies to work for in 2011, 82 percent of these firms offer telecommuting opportunities to workers.

The top 10 of the list contains the company’s ranking in Fortune and the percentage of regular telecommuters or employees who work from home at least 20 percent of the time.

The 10 top in terms of percentage of telecommuters are:

  1. Deloitte – No. 63, 86 percent\
  2. Cisco – No. 20, 85 percent
  3. Intel – No. 51, 82 percent
  4. Accenture – No. 99, 80 percent
  5. Teach for America – No. 82, 80 percent
  6. PricewaterhouseCoopers – No. 73, 70 percent
  7. Brocade Telecommunications Systems – No. 89
  8. 50 percent 8. S.C. Johnson & Son – No. 70, 40 percent
  9. Stryker – No. 68, 38 percent
  10. American Fidelity Insurance – No. 39, 37 percent.

Fishery Expert Urges International Agreement On Salmon Production

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010
AHN News Staff

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (AHN) – A Canadian fishery expert urged on Monday that an international agreement on salmon production be drawn up to prevent overcrowding of salmon stock in the North Pacific. Estimates by a Canadian-U.S. research team placed the population of adult pink, chum and sockeye salmon to twice as much as in the 1950s.

Randall Peterman, Canada Research Chair in Fisheries Risk Assessment and Management, attributed the surge in the salmon population to 718 million adult salmon returning to their freshwater homes in 2005. The large number indicates overpopulation of the ocean with salmon.

Partly responsible for the sharp rise in the salmon population is the annual release of five billion salmon fries from hatcheries in Japan and Alaska. The result of this annual release is adult salmon from hatcheries now make up about 20 percent of total adult salmon production. Peterman forecast their number would continue to increase.

Peterman said an international treaty will help manage production levels to prevent the domination of hatchery fish in the ocean. He explained the dwindling salmon stock to a regional problem, such as the one experienced in British Columbia’s Fraser River.

He said in North Pacific, Asia and other parts of North American total salmon population is abundant, also because of increased survival rates.

Peterman pointed out the need for production control over hatchery salmon and wild salmon is because the former stray into wild waters and interbreed with the latter, which dilutes the strength of the wild salmon species.

He said the wild salmon’s genes allow them to respond to different situations such as climate change, but the hatchery salmon are generally not successful as wild salmon to fluctuating condition.

The study is published in the online October edition of “Marine and Coastal Fisheries: Dynamic Management and Ecosystem Science.”

Want to Open a Bar? Know Your Startup Costs

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

By the time you investigate and determine each cost of starting up a bar, you may have spent months on research only to determine that you cannot profitably operate in the way you had envisioned, sending you back to square one. Avoid this possibility by starting with an expert (and preferably more than one) who can help you create a top-down estimate.

Start With Your Network

The first place to look is with friends, family, or contacts of your friends and family who are willing to speak with you from their experience of launching a bar. Hopefully they will be willing to do so for nothing more than the satisfaction of you out. Some bar start up costs are similar to those of a nightclub or restaurant, so consider speaking to individuals with those experiences as well.

Non-Competing Business Owners

Bar business owners operating in another city, far enough away that they cannot be considered a competitor, may be willing to help you out by sitting down to describe the costs of launching. Perhaps the consulting fee may be as low as the cost of the business owner’s lunch.

When talking to individuals who have opened bars in the past, be sure to determine whether the cost of doing business and launching in your city will be higher or lower than in the other city, and by how much. Compare prices for some standard items between these markets to check this. Also consider the effect of inflation in the years that have passed since the business owner you spoke with launched his or her bar. Apply the geographic conversion and inflation to the estimates they gave to get a better estimate.

Consultants

Paid consultants with experience helping bars to launch are another means to expert opinions on startup costs. The cost may be significantly higher than speaking with a business owner, but you may gain from their experience working with multiple businesses and the fact that their business reputation rests on their ability to give good advice. As long as you check references carefully for any consultant you work with, you can be reasonably assured of receiving good help.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, remember that all of the experts you speak with can only give you estimates and that the actual costs you may incur will be higher or lower than the total they give. You will eventually have to do your own detailed investigation, but after speaking with a few experts you should have a range can assume you are operating within.

While you are speaking to an expert about start up costs, don’t miss the opportunity to ask about other key challenges they came up against and hearing advice they wish they had received before they launched. Document any knowledge you can gain from their experience.

An Introduction to Restaurant Loans

Friday, June 18th, 2010

What are restaurant loans? This is a query being circulated amongst restaurant owners and fast food chain franchisers for the past year. To answer this briefly, restaurant loans are business loans that are primarily availed of by restaurant owners. These are loans that have been personalized in order to address to each and every need of such restaurant owners. The amount that you can get will depend upon the type of restaurant or business that you have together with the time frame that the said business has been established, a summary of the annual sales of your restaurant, the total amount that you need and your credit score. You will also be asked if you have already filed for bankruptcy and then your loan can be processed.

Your business may belong to a classification like a bar, lodging, nightclub, restaurant or other classifications. This is crucial information in order for your need for restaurant loans to be processed by the bank or lending firm. Logical dictates that bigger restaurants, bars and nightclubs will necessarily get bigger amount of loans than smaller scaled ones. If you are in deep need of financial assistance due to the effects of the worldwide recession and the global financial crisis then this is the perfect kind of loan for you to avail of! The larger your chain of restaurants are then the larger the amount that you can borrow, it is as easy as that!

The total duration or time frame that the business has been established is also a primary requirement before availing of these restaurant loans. The longer that your business or restaurant has been subsisting then necessarily the larger the amount of loan that you can borrow. This is in correlation with your annual sales that can come in gross or net sales. If your business has been doing well then you can get higher amounts. If your business is on a struggle against the global recession then the amount that can be granted to your will be lessened. An expert with regard to handling loans called a loans expert will be the one to process your request, trying to grant you the total amount that you need in the process.

Your credit score is also one of the primary factors in determining the validity of your restaurant loans application. If you have bad credit score then necessarily you will not be prioritized. If you currently have well to moderate credit scores then you will be put in the priority list. Having well to moderate scores will ensure approval of your loan. All you need to do is to wait for 24 hours for your loan application to be approved and processed by the loans expert. It is a major plus if you have not yet filed for bankruptcy since you will have good scores. Just make sure that you fill up the application form with the correct facts since the loans expert will conduct a credit investigation on your credit standing. It is as easy as that!
