Copenhagen, Denmark (AHN) – Health experts have long touted a low sodium diet for the masses, maintaining that reduced sodium lowers the risk for heart disease and stroke.
However, new research published online Nov. 9 in the American Journal of Hypertension, finds that cutting back on salt may increase levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and other risk factors for heart disease. It is not yet clear what the findings mean for long-term health.
The Danish researchers found that less salt did lower blood pressure in whites, blacks and Asians who had either normal or high blood pressure.
But it came with significant increases in levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, the enzyme renin (involved in regulating blood pressure) and the hormones noradrenaline and adrenaline, which can both affect blood pressure and heart rate.
For decades, health experts have advocated reducing sodium consumption. In addition, there has been a powerful new government push to reduce the amount of salt in prepared, processed and restaurant foods.
New U.S. dietary guidelines recommend that people ages 2 and older limit daily sodium intake to less than 2,300 milligrams. People aged 51 and older, blacks and anyone with high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease should consider limiting their daily sodium intake to 1,500 mg.
The American Heart Association believes the 1,500 milligrams a day recommendation should be standard for all Americans.
While the new findings are being reviewed, health experts say the recommendation for the general public remains the same when it comes to salt: less is probably better.

Ottawa, Canada (AHN) – New research links low blood sugar in obese people with a stronger urge within the brain for high calorie foods, in turn, driving them to eat more and crave these foods more, which may lead to overeating.
The new findings were published in the online issue of The Journal of Clinical Investigation. In the study, researchers set out to find if dips in blood sugar affect obese people differently than people who are not obese. The researchers used MRI scanners to monitor the brains of five obese and nine non-obese people as the subjects’ blood sugar levels were adjusted from normal to low.
The findings show that obese people had less brain activity in the area known as the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that controls choices, even when their blood sugar levels were normal. The researchers say that the low prefrontal cortex brain activity suggests that obese people may have a much harder time fighting the urge to eat, especially when their sugar levels fall below normal.
The study did not reveal if this urge to eat more high calorie food is a consequence of obesity or if some people’s brains are wired differently from the start. But what it does conclude is the importance of keeping blood sugar levels stable.

Denver, CO, United States (AHN) – Frontier Airlines has announced new, lower fees for passengers, which is good news ahead of the busy summer travel season. Changes include removing fees for changing your itinerary prior to travel and a discount on the checked baggage fee when booking online.
“Many of the changes we’re making are really geared towards those who value choice and clarity in their travel experience,” Frontier Airlines Vice President of Marketing Ian Arthur said. “With the Classic fare, a guest can now enjoy the flexibility of no change fees, in addition to two complimentary checked bags, same-day standby, bonus EarlyReturns miles and more – making the Classic fare by far the best bang for your buck.”
“The beauty of our Classic and Classic Plus fares is the freedom they provide our guests to select the option that best meets their unique travel needs and bundles those features into an affordable package, rather than paying for them a la carte,” Arthur added.
According to the airline, fees for same-day confirmed flight changes on Classic tickets will be reduced to $25 and the excess bag fee will be standardized at $50 per bag.
Frontier Airlines currently operates a fleet of 90 planes, operating out of hubs in Denver, Milwaukee, Kansas City and Omaha.

San Francisco, CA, United States (AHN) – Telecommuting job opportunities in the U.S. jumped almost 400 percent in the past three years, according to online employment portal FlexJobs.
FlexJobs Chief Executive Officer Sara Sutton Fell said Wednesday that aside from the rising number of job openings, the number of young people in search of work for telecommuting and flexible jobs also grew 181 percent during the past three years.
A human resources expert explained that telecommuting work is the preferred option of the younger generation because it offers them better work-life balance.
The arrangement also removes a lot of overhead expenses for companies because it frees them from office space rental, and saves people transport costs, while helping reduce commuter and vehicle volume.
However, one downside to the arrangement is the lack of social interaction for home-based workers, particularly those who live alone.
While technology permits personal chats among online co-workers, social relationships from such means of communications often lack depth, experts said.
According to Fortune Magazine, which issued this year its list of 100 best companies to work for in 2011, 82 percent of these firms offer telecommuting opportunities to workers.
The top 10 of the list contains the company’s ranking in Fortune and the percentage of regular telecommuters or employees who work from home at least 20 percent of the time.
The 10 top in terms of percentage of telecommuters are:
- Deloitte – No. 63, 86 percent\
- Cisco – No. 20, 85 percent
- Intel – No. 51, 82 percent
- Accenture – No. 99, 80 percent
- Teach for America – No. 82, 80 percent
- PricewaterhouseCoopers – No. 73, 70 percent
- Brocade Telecommunications Systems – No. 89
- 50 percent 8. S.C. Johnson & Son – No. 70, 40 percent
- Stryker – No. 68, 38 percent
- American Fidelity Insurance – No. 39, 37 percent.

Seattle, WA, United States (AHN) – Starbucks will begin selling beverages in a larger size this week in selected states.
According to ABC television, the company will start rolling out 31-ounce “trenta” cups for iced drinks on Tuesday in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Texas and 10 other states, and on Feb.1 in California.
Trenta-sized drinks will be available nationwide by May 3. They will cost 50 cents more than beverages in the soon to be second-largest size, Venti.
Trenta has been available in selected stores for the past few months but the company’s decision to start offering it officially received mixed reactions from coffee drinkers and baristas in online forums.
“It is ridiculous, but there is so much ice in it, it really only has 16 ounces of liquid,” commented a poster named rikkilee.
“We had a post about this months ago when it first came out, and the general consensus was split down the middle between love and hate. I, personally, enjoy having an iced passion tea lemonade that lasts throughout my classes,” said kikkomato.
“It’s strange that this size is being introduced in the middle of winter,” Venti Urnex Latte said, to which a another user replied that the states chosen for the roll-out all have warm weather.
The change follows Starbucks’ announcement in early January that it was removing its name from its iconic logo. The updated green ring around a black and white Siren will be launched in March and is part of the company’s observance of its 40th anniversary.
