UNESCO Names French Cuisine As “Intangible World Heritage”

Thursday, November 18th, 2010
AHN News Staff

Nairobi, Kenya (AHN) – The United Nations’ cultural organization, UNESCO, has named the French multi-course gastronomic meal to the Convention of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Gathered in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, the UNESCO experts said the French gastronomic meal was featured on the UNESCO’s world heritage list because of its presentation and rites. Catherine Colonna, the French ambassador to UNESCO, welcomed the decision and said it made a contribution to cultural diversity.

“The French love getting together to eat and drink well and enjoy good times in such a manner. It is part of our tradition – a quite active tradition,” she added.

Francis Chevrier, chief delegate of the French mission, also hailed the decision. “It’s very important that people realize, in villages in Africa and everywhere, that when you have knowledge of food it is a treasure for your community, and something worth cherishing,” he said. “It’s wonderful. This is excellent news for French culture, for French heritage, to invite our cuisine, our gastronomic heritage to sit at the high table of culture at UNESCO,” Chevrier added.

However, UNESCO’s decision has also sparked concerns that people might use its heritage label for their commercial benefit.

Out of 51 cultural practices around the world, four elements, including China’s Turkish-speaking Muslim Uighur people’s harvest festival ceremony – Meshrep, Croatian Ojkanje singing and two other Chinese cultural practices have been included on the Convention of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

LVMH Buys 17 Percent Of Rival Hermes

Thursday, November 4th, 2010
Stephanie Sims – AHN Entertainment Reporter

Paris, France (AHN) – Is this the start of a battle between two of France’s luxury goods companies? Hermes reportedly rejected an “attack” on its capital from Louis-Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH).

LVMH, the French holding company and the world’s largest luxury goods group that owns more than 50 global brands, including Christian Dior perfumes, Givenchy fashion and TAG Hauer watches, now owns a bit of stake in Hermes. Hermes is a French fashion house that has branched into perfume and luxury goods.

Bernard Arnault, head of LVMH, announced he had bought 17 percent of his rival Hermes. However, he insisted that he is not trying for a hostile takeover. Instead, according to Le Figar, Arnault is calling himself a “friendly” long-term shareholder.

It’s unclear which – his stake in the company or the term “friendly long-term shareholder” – rubbed Hermes the wrong way, but it appears the company was irked.

“If you want to be friendly, Mr. Arnault, you should withdraw,” Hermes executives Bertrand Puech and Patrick Thomas reportedly told French daily newspaper Le Figaro. Puech is a fifth-generation heir of Hermes’ founder Emile Hermes, while Thomas is the family owned firm’s manager. The pair alleged Arnault’s tactics in taking the stake were questionable and said they hoped the financial services watchdog would investigate.

“This entry has nothing friendly about it. It was neither wanted nor asked for,” said Thomas, as Puech complained that he had had barely one hours notice from Arnault before LVMH released a statement confirming its purchase.

But, both executives, while clearly angry, said that Arnault’s move would not change the culture at Hermes. In addition, Arnault has not asked for a seat on the board.

“We’re artisans; our goal is to make the best products in the world,” Puech told Le Figaro. “We’re not in luxury, we’re in quality.”

Madonna To Open “Hard Candy” Fitness Centers

Monday, October 25th, 2010
Anthony Jones – AHN Entertainment Reporter

Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) – Thanks to her strict fitness regimen (and we’re sure her dance-intensive, high-energy sold-out stadium shows never hurt either), Madonna has managed to stay in incredible shape at 52. But now, the queen of pop herself is getting into the business of staying fit by opening gyms across the world.

Madonna is partnering with her longtime manager Guy Oseary and New Evolution Ventures to create “Hard Candy Fitness,” named after her multi-platinum 2008 album. “Hard Candy Fitness” will combine state-of-the-art training facilities with a design and entertainment page out of the pop queen’s handbook.

“Our goal is to create an environment inspired by Madonna’s vision and high standards of what the ideal gym would be,” said NEV Chairman Mark Mastrov, who helped launch 24 Hour Fitness centers around the world. “Hard Candy Fitness will be a reflection of Madonna’s point of view and will reflect her input on every detail including music space, light and other design cues. Madonna’s touch will be everywhere.”

The first Hard Candy Fitness will open in Mexico City in mid-November in the Bosques de las Lomas area. Madonna will be visiting the first Hard Candy Fitness center in Mexico City for its official launch on November 29th.

Hard Candy Fitness centers will include the latest equipment complete with personal viewing screens, a Bike Studio, a Mind Body Studio for Yoga practice, and private and group training.

They’ll also feature new classes designed exclusively for Hard Candy Fitness centers, as well as current gym staples like Cardio Kickboxing and Zumba. Each fitness center will also include sauna and steam rooms, a healthy juice bar, and more.

Additional locations in Argentina, Russia, Brazil, and throughout Europe and Asia are currently in the planning stages. Registration is currently open for its Mexico City site. Let’s hope the cost is less than her ultra-pricey concert tickets.

Madonna also recently launched a clothing line at Macy’s with daughter Lourdes, and directed the film “W.E.” for release next year. She’s also been working on the follow-up to “Hard Candy,” which is also slated for release in 2011.
